10th Winter Farmers’ Market and Brunch a Success!
Thanks to the dedicated efforts of more than 120 long-standing and new volunteers, the St. Sebastian 10th Winter Farmers Market and Brunch, held March 3, 2019, was a great success. Sales were up 10% over last year! Some vendors completely sold out and all of them left with much lighter loads than when they arrived. Needless to say, they left very happy. More than 450 guests enjoyed a satisfying farm-to-table meal, and we truly expressed our Catholic Social Teaching beliefs in Solidarity, the Dignity of Work & Rights of Workers and Care for Creation.
The event had a bittersweet moment as we recognized the farmers who helped start it all, Tony and Dela Ends from Scotch Hill Farms. They are semi-retiring from farming, as they are both in their mid-60’s and have a difficult time with the physical labor of running a farm. Tony got a job teaching in the ag dept at UW Platteville. Dela is still on the board of the Midwest Organics Association and their local farmers union.
As Dela mentioned in her passionate presentation, the state of Wisconsin loses about two farms per day, and it is a very difficult decision for them. They’ll still farm but smaller scale and won’t offer a CSA this summer. They plan to dedicate more time to farmer and consumer education.
